Joe Liddle, 78, took these scenes as he went on a drive round Sunderland in 1983 and he shared them with his brother Keith, 63, who kindly forwarded the footage to the Sunderland Echo.
Today, we bring you the first part of the footage and we have much more to share with you in the days to come.
Keith explained that his father used to live in Sunderland and worked at Doxfords shipyard but left Wearside in 1954 to work as a riveter in a Beverley shipyard on minesweepers.

"Joe has had it on VHS tape and got some equipment so it could be transferred on to DVD. I have had them for about ten years and I thought to myself ‘I wonder if the Echo would be interested?
"I am so glad it is of interest.”
