Brian, from East Boldon, spent around 45 minutes waiting to be taken to hospital after the first ambulance which arrived was unable to take him.
He said: “The ambulance drivers were fantastic but the first ambulance that turned up didn’t have a spinal board because they had just used it on their last job. I had surgery on my neck last year, so they were very concerned about whether I might have damaged it again.
“I only started cycling on the recommendation from mu physiotherapist as a way to get myself out and about.”

He said: “I don’t have a clue who they were but for them to spend that time with me was very comforting.
“My partner Kirsty is a policewoman and she actually attended. She spoke with the people who were there but totally forgot to get their names.
“One couple who lived nearby brought my bike round the next day and we got them a thank you card and some chocolates, but I’d really like to thank everyone else who helped.”
