Man faces jail after helping himself to free pints from behind bar at club

Daniel Bates, 37, has been left with the bitter taste as he was threatened with prison over his attempt to take two pints of beer from the Royal Artillery Club in Mary Street on Wednesday, March 4.
District Judge Kathryn Meek told Bates, of Pickard Street, Millfield, Sunderland: “The starting point probably is a custodial sentence given your record.”

Hide AdBates pleaded guilty to charges of trespass with intent to steal and to possession of a Class B drug when he appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.
Defending him, solicitor Robin Ford said: “He’s gone behind the bar to get some beers, a couple of free pints.”
The case was adjourned for sentencing to Thursday, March 19, at the same court.
Bates was granted bail.
