Woman dies days after being seriously hurt in Sunderland crash

Jean Hardy, 71, was left fighting for her life in a critical condition in hospital following the incident, which happened in Doxford Park Way in Sunderland on Tuesday, February 4.

Hide AdPolice closed off the dual carriageway in both directions while officers dealt with the incident.
The North East Ambulance Service confirmed it was called to the scene, outside Morrisons supermarket at the William Doxford Centre, and sent four resources to the area, including a doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance.
Police investigating the collision have previously appealed for any witnesses to come forward and said they had spoken to the driver of the car, who was not injured.

Hide AdA force statement added: “The driver of the vehicle was not injured and was spoken to by police at the scene.
“The road was closed to allow officers to carry out their investigation but it was re-opened at about 9pm.”
A spokesperson for the Northumbria Police said: “Emergency services attended and the woman was taken to hospital with a number of serious injuries but sadly she has now died.
The pedestrian has been named as Jean Hardy from the Doxford Park area of Sunderland.

Hide AdSpecially trained officers are currently supporting Jean’s family.
“Inquiries into the incident are ongoing and police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to come forward.
“Officers are keen to speak to any motorists who were driving in the area at the time and may have dashcam footage of the incident.”
The road was reopened to motorists by around 9pm on the night of the collision.
