Last year, proposals were lodged for the Beach View Lodge on Roker Terrace.
The three-storey building dates to around 1880 and boasts panoramic views of Roker’s pier and beaches.

This includes converting the site into eight self-contained apartments with a mix of one and two-bedroom spaces on offer.
According to a design and heritage statement, the site is currently used as “overflow capacity” for the Roker Hotel.
However, applicants say the plans would help safeguard the lodge’s future – with apartments offered for resale in the long-term.

A planning statement adds: “While the existing area is safe and well looked after we feel having a fully owner-occupied property will improve the feel and sense of safety [sic] to this community.
“We believe the site is located in an existing sustainable setting with good local access to facilities and transport links.
“This project will provide investment and provide dwellings in a suitable desirable location.”

Council planners gave the final go-ahead to the plans on Friday, September 20.
Under council conditions, work must take place on the lodge within three years.
