Flood alert issued for River Wear as heavy rain causes chaos on Sunderland roads

River levels are forecast to rise on the River Wear as a result of ‘prolonged rainfall’ throughout Tuesday night (February 2) and into Wednesday, February 3.
A large stretch of the A19 has been closed off to traffic between Seaham and Sunderland as heavy rain caused the road to flood.

Hide AdSmaller watercourses and tributaries in areas around Houghton – including the River Browney and Moors Burn – are particularly at risk.
The Met Office previously issued a yellow weather warning for rain remains in place until 12pm on Thursday, February 4.
The Flood Information Service, which issued the alert, said: “Flooding of low lying roads and farmland is possible from 7am today until this afternoon.
"The main impacts are being observed on smaller watercourses and tributaries, in particular areas around Houghton including River Browney and Moors Burn.

Hide Ad"Areas most at risk are riverside footpaths, low lying land and roads.
"We are closely monitoring the situation. Take care near the areas of concern and monitor your local weather conditions. Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.”
The Met Office has forecast heavy rain throughout much of the day.
Although at times it may be lighter, the rain is only expected to take a short break at around 7pm before it continues well into Wednesday night.
