'Well done Sunderland and all that made it possible' - readers praise for Tall Ships Races
Ships started to arrive on Monday, and the majestic Parade of Sail took place off the coast of Sunderland on Saturday.

Hide AdThe numbers helped crown the event as one of the biggest in Sunderland's history - and was said to be the biggest free festival of entertainment to be held anywhere in the UK this year.
More than 50 ships visited Sunderland as part of the sailing spectacular, including Russian vessel Mir, which was 350ft long.

"Each day had its own pluses. Tuesday evening in the port was great for getting close to the ships.

Hide Ad"There was enough people to create a good atmosphere but it wasn’t too crowded. Wednesday to Friday saw open ships, which was brilliant.
"Saturday was very interesting watching as the crews and trainees prepared to leave, people climbed high up the masts, jobs on deck were being done, the trainees were being briefed etc.
"The crew parade, ships leaving parade, Finnish circus, high wire walkers and firework displays were very enjoyable."
