Liam Gillesphey got the Northern League side back on level-terms just after the half-hour, but Cieran Dunne restored the Black Cats’ lead with a cool finish before half-time.

But a dogged and determined Red Star side got back in the game with a Paul Gardiner goal after the hour-mark.

After the game, Dickman admitted that his side will need to improve if they are to deliver the club’s first Durham Challenge Cup Final win since 2008.

“I don’t think we stood up to it and I was quite disappointed with how we played in the first half.
“I just felt we were intimidated by them and that means it’s a great learning experience for the players.
“We need to try and control the game a little bit more and it means that we can dictate the game rather than letting them dictate it.
