He then spent just a season with Wigan before being released alongside ex-Sunderland teammates Callum McManaman and James Vaughan.
Meanwhile, Shrewsbury Town are the latest side to be credited with an interest in Sunderland striker Will Grigg.
The Northern Irish international is out of favour at the Stadium of Light and was dropped from Phil Parkinson’s squad for the trip to MK Dons last weekend.

Hide AdAnd while the Black Cats’ boss is reluctant to lose the striker this month, the Sun claim that both the Shrews and Salford City are keen on a loan move for Grigg.
Speaking yesterday about the striker’s future, Parkinson said: “If as the window goes on and someone falls down the pecking order even more and we feel there’s a right move for us and them then we’ll consider it.
“At the moment we want to keep everyone who is here.”
