And ahead of the clash, Lee Johnson has some key decisions to make when it comes to team selection.
The likes of Bailey Wright and Denver Hume are set to miss out while Jordan Jones and Aiden O’Brien will again be monitored.
But while squad depth is still somewhat thin, Johnson may be tempted to make some changes amid the hectic fixture schedule – which sees Sunderland face Oxford United and Peterborugh United over the Easter weekend.
So who could be in-line for a chance at the Memorial Stadium, and who could be afforded a rest?
Our writer Mark Donnelly has picked his team for the game, with two changes from the side who drew with Lincoln City last time out.
What team would you name? Let us know on our Twitter page – @sunechosafc.
1. GK: Lee Burge
The stopper has been in fine form of late and is now one of the first names on the teamsheet. While other areas of the field may see things freshened-up, it would be a major surprise were Burge not to start against the Gas. Photo: FRANK REID 2019
2. RB: Max Power
Sunderland's skipper has played a variety of positions in recent weeks, but could again be asked to start at right-back in the South West. With Conor McLaughlin away on international duty, the Black Cats' options in this area are fairly limited. Photo: FRANK REID 2019
3. CB: Dion Sanderson
Sanderson has impressed since the turn of the year and given Sunderland's injury woes at the back, is all-but guaranteed a start at Bristol. Photo: Frank Reid
4. CB: Luke O'Nien
Mr Versatile himself, O'Nien has built-up a solid partnership with Sanderson in recent weeks and Lee Johnson is likely to continue with that pairing at Bristol. Photo: FRANK REID 2020
