With the Black Cats’ place in the play-offs already secured and a semi-final clash on the horizon, some starting players could be set for a rest after a gruelling fixture schedule.
The likes of Bailey Wright and Denver Hume have recently recovered from injuries and with fitness concerns thrown into the mix as well, Johnson could be minded to adopt a safety first approach against the Cobblers – who themselves are already relegated and have little to play for.
So if changes are to be made, who could be knocking on the door for an opportunity?
We take a look at NINE players who may well be in line for a start should Sunderland opt to rotate their squad this weekend – with youngsters and fringe players in the mix.
1. Remi Matthews
Lee Burge has been a regular for Sunderland in recent weeks, but could the stopper be handed a rest in the final fixture of the season? If so, Matthews may be set for an opportunity. Photo: FRANK REID 2020
2. Anthony Patterson
Or would this be an ideal opportunity to hand Anthony Patterson a League One debut? The academy graduate has played in the Papa John's Trophy this season but is yet to taste league action. Photo: FRANK REID 2020
3. Oliver Younger
With Sunderland's defensive options limited due to injuries, both Bailey Wright and Luke O'Nien have played a considerable amount of football in recent weeks. If either of the pair are to be rested, then Younger is a likely candidate to come into the side. Photo: FRANK REID 2020
4. Callum McFadzean
McFadzean has had to be content with a place on the bench in recent weeks as Denver Hume returned to the side, but could return for this game to ensure that Hume is fresh and ready for the play-offs. Photo: FRANK REID 2020
